Donations to Help Utah High School Library Destroyed by Fire

11/20/2012

A fire gutted the media center of San Juan High School in Blanding early Saturday morning, Nov. 17, causing an estimate $1 million in damage. The media center and its contents – books, computers, printers, furniture, etc. – are a total loss. In addition, four nearby classrooms received severe smoke damage. About 400 students attend the school.

“It’s devastating for a school and a community to suffer a loss like this,” said UEA Executive Director Mark Mickelsen. “Our hearts go out to the students and teachers as they work to rebuild their school.”

To help teachers devastated by this fire, the Utah Education Association and the High Desert UniServ joined with the UEA Children at Risk Foundation to create a special “San Juan Fire Fund.” Funds will be used to reimburse teachers for any losses not covered by insurance.

If you would like to contribute, send a check (payable to the Children at Risk Foundation) in any amount to UEA Children at Risk Foundation, c/o Brenda Pett, 875 E. 5180 South, Murray, UT 84107. Indicate you would like your donation to go to the “San Juan Fire Fund.” You can direct any questions about donating procedures (including how to donate by credit card) to Brenda Pett, brenda.pett@utea.org, (801) 266-4461, ext. 109.

Donations can also be sent to the San Juan Educational Foundation, 200 North Main, Blanding, UT 84511.
