Special Events for 2016

Celebrate Utah public education at the 2016 UEA Convention & Education Exposition Thursday and Friday, October 20-21, at the South Towne Expo Center in Sandy

The UEA Convention & Education Exposition is Utah’s premier education event. The UEA has been providing teacher training at its annual Convention for more than 100 years. Recent years have included activities for kids, parents and anyone interested in public education.
The 2016 UEA Convention is open to anyone interested in public education!

Regular admission is $10. For free tickets, see a public school teacher.

Opening Session—

Newly elected UEA President Heidi Matthews kicks off the Convention followed by a keynote presentation by NEA President and former Utah teacher Lily Eskelsen Garcia, a long-time public school and association advocate at national, state and local levels. Utah Governor Gary Herbert will also address attendees.

'Hot Topics and Hot Dogs' Political Event—

Join UEA’s political activists for the exclusive annual Hot Topics and Hot Dogs event. Mix and mingle with Utah’s political players over an informal lunch. Federal, state and local legislative candidates will join the group and provide remarks. The event is open to everyone. The lunch is free for UEA Capitol Club members or for a suggested minimum $10 on-site donation to UEA-PAC.

Keynote Session—

Friday’s opening session presenter is award-winning educator Erin Gruwell, inspiration for the 2007 hit movie “Freedom Writers” starring Oscar® winner Hilary Swank. The film is based on The Freedom Writers Diary, the New York Times bestseller that chronicled Gruwell’s extraordinary journey with her 150 high school students.

Targeted Track for New Educators—

New Educators’ Workshop is a full-day professional workshop at the UEA Convention designed specifically for early career educators and students in teacher preparation programs. Workshops cover a variety of topics such as teaching and learning with iPads, STEM and project-based learning, and environmental education across the curriculum. Lunch is provided for the first 200 participants who pre-register for the event by Oct. 14. Register online or call 800-594-8996, ext. 120.

SPECIAL EVENT: New Educator Panel Discussion—

Many policies affecting teacher licenses, classrooms and students are determined in the political arena at both the state and local level. This interactive panel discussion will share experience in the politics of the profession and best practices for engagement in public policy so you can be an advocate for your students and your profession.

Seminars and Workshops—

Learning opportunities include professional development sessions designed for educators, as well as seminars and workshops to help parents with children in public schools. While there will be training opportunities on a variety of topics and interests both days, Thursday’s professional focus is on veteran teachers and Friday’s emphasis is on new educators. Teachers can track re-licensure points using the License Renewal Credit Form (PDF).

Exhibit Hall—

The Exhibit Hall area features dozens of vendor booths, a stage areas with hourly activities, the hands-on KUED Kids Exploration Corner and a variety of other activities. Other Exhibit Hall events include:

    Dozens of vendor booths will fill the Exhibit Hall, promoting products and services geared toward education and the needs of education professionals.

  • Presentation Stages—
    The Columbus Community Center Stage will feature hourly education-related workshops and entertainment.

  • Book Giveaway—
    Win a book by shooting hoops at the Book-A-Basket free throw area. The Utah Jazz Bear will tip off the event Thursday. UEA members also receive a free book with ticket provided at registration.

  • Health Screenings—
    Health screening exams — including cholesterol, glucose, blood pressure, body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage and eye screenings (for UEA members only with ticket provided at registration).

  • KUED Kids Exploration Corner—
    Families and educators are invited to join KUED Kids in the Exploration Corner for hands-on experiences. Educators grades K-12 will take home curriculum guides and classroom lesson plan ideas from community organizations. Families will explore STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and math) and literacy activities and meet their favorite PBS Kids characters!

UEA Booth—

Stop by the UEA Booth, located in the foyer outside the Exhibit Hall, for information about UEA membership, the UEA Political Action Committee, the Children at Risk Foundation and the UEA Retired program.

Giveaways and Drawings—

Each UEA member who attends the Convention will receive a free bag, courtesy of Chevron Fuel Your School (limited to the first 2,500 attendees). In addition, UEA members can enter to win a 7-night condo stay at one of thousands of worldwide locations (courtesy of Access Development), one of three $100 Utah Idaho Supply/Map World gift cards, or one of three $100 Donors Choose gift cards (courtesy of Chevron). To enter, UEA members must complete the “Golden Ticket” contained in the UEA Convention Program (mailed to each member) and return it to the UEA Booth in the foyer.

Free Tickets—

As always, entrance to the UEA Convention is free to UEA members. The regular admission is $10. For a free ticket, please see a public school teacher! (Teachers: Tickets were included in the UEA Convention Program mailed to each UEA member at the end of September. For additional tickets, see the UEA Association Representative in your building or call the UEA at 800-594-8996.)

  • Persons with disabilities should contact Kristi Critchlow,, 801-266-4461, ext. 108, concerning arrangements that may facilitate convention attendance. Arrangements should be made prior to October 12, 2016, or UEA cannot guarantee the availability of such arrangements. Last-minute and onsite requests may not be honored due to availability. UEA will provide interpreters for hearing-impaired individuals and other accommodations as possible and available (such as escorts or readers for persons with visual impairments). During the Convention, persons with disabilities who require assistance may visit the UEA Booth, located in the Convention foyer.  All persons are responsible for their own transportation to and from the Convention location.
