Don't tell me that teaching is 'no big deal'! by Sharon Gallagher-Fishbaugh

"Our progress as a nation can be no swifter than our progress in education."

John F Kennedy

Dear Colleagues,

The late President Kennedy articulated beautifully the significance of the teaching profession and its impact on our society.

I've often commented that teaching IS rocket science. Teaching is complex. Teaching is a profession filled with talented and skilled individuals. Teaching deserves respect.

It is past time to stand up and be proud of what we do. I ask you to find your voice and reclaim our profession. Teachers have the solutions to all that we face in public education. We must demand to be heard. We must speak up and lead from our classrooms. We are the only ones who can change the discourse. We are the solution. We are the experts. We are educators.

So, during this Teacher Appreciation Week, let me THANK YOU once again for choosing to teach. Consider this, "The effects you will have on your students are infinite and unknown; you will possibly shape the way they proceed in their careers, the way they will vote, the way they will behave as partners and spouses, the way they will raise their kids." Donna Quesada

Don't tell me that teaching is 'no big deal'!

With deepest appreciation for all you do,

UEA President
